PSMFC Releases New Zebra Mussel Video (May 2008)

Don't Move a Mussel

In April 2008, the PSMFC released a new “DON’T MOVE A MUSSEL.” This video, funded by the US Fish Wildlife Service, provides the viewer with background information on quagga and zebra mussels, including origins, distribution, biology and transport vectors and a detailed assessment of the impacts they can have on the economy, ecology and culture as told through the eyes of industry representatives. We hope that the video will be used as a tool to inform, educate and train others who are likewise confronted with the daunting task of protecting public and private resources from suffering needless damage that occurs when these mussels are allowed to hitchhike on watercraft and equipment from one waterbody to the next. This 46 minute DVD also includes a watercraft inspection and decontamination training section.

Zebra Mussel

(Dreissena polymorpha)

Zebra mussels have disrupted the traditional aquatic food chains of many inland lakes. Their voracious filter feeding depletes the availability of microscopic organisms that play a critical part in each lake's ecological food web.
